Greetings loved ones…
Salutations! My name is Marium. I am a twenty year old youth who resides in Houston, Texas, studying English literature at the Universtiy of Saint Thomas, and trying to make it to law school or Atlantis someday. I migrated to Houston fourteen years ago from Pakistan and absolutely fell in love with the city’s diverse culture, authentic food, entertainment variety, a selection of schools, and did I mention how amazing our transportation system is? I feel like the welcoming atmosphere of the city is open to all types of personalities: liberals, republicans, Mexicans, evangelists, you name it!
However, lately I have felt a disconnection to Houston, my home. It’s the fourth largest city in America with a population of over TWO MILLION! Obviously it’s impossible to know even ten percent of those people but I feel like lately we have been losing our welcoming feel, of course, due to the high rates of overpopulation in our city. We are losing that sense of “community” and need to bring back that southern hospitality. I feel an extreme disconnect to my neighbors and just citizens I may run into on a regular basis: grocery store clerks, students on campus, people you see at shows, or even just regular people on the street. I want to get to know them, I want to be a part of my big city, make it more homey and stop feeling so lost. I’m embarassed to say that I have actually never fully experienced Houston’s downtown and actually avoid it at all costs. However, as my summer begins, I would like to meet someone new or learn more about someone I already know, everyday and feature them on this blog.
The purpose of this blog is to feature citizens of Houston: regular Joes, up and coming artists that are trying to make it, youths, elders, middle aged housewives, just to get a jist of everyone’s story. The blog will also feature a podcast that my friend Chanelle and I do that features happenings in the city and daily issues Houstonians face.
